Finally we hit on something: since we&#8217;re both neologistas &#8212; people who enjoy spending their free time coining new words &#8212; we decided to compile a list of the neologisms we&#8217;d most like to see adopted by the general population.  Without further ado:<\/p>\n<p><strong>shnood:<\/strong> (roughly) an imposter; a person oblivious to just how trivial or wrong his ideas are.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Were there any interesting speakers at the conference?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;No, just a bunch of <em>shnoods<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The magazine <em>New Scientist<\/em> loves to feature <em>shnoods<\/em> on the cover.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Note: someone who&#8217;s utterly contemptible would <em>not<\/em> be a shnood, but rather a schmuck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>iriterie:<\/strong> a list or compilation of people named Irit.<\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"#comments\">comments on the last post<\/a> for an example of an <em>iriterie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>extralusionary intelligence:<\/strong> intelligence in one domain that is misapplied in another.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bob&#8217;s a brilliant physicist &#8212; I bet he&#8217;s onto something with his condensed-matter approach to P versus NP.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;No, he&#8217;s just suffering from <em>extralusionary intelligence<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>circumpolitical:<\/strong> So far to one end of the political spectrum that one is actually on the other end.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Professor Zimmerman mounted a <em>circumpolitical<\/em> defense of hereditary dictatorship, female genital mutilation, and the dragging of murdered homosexuals through the streets, arguing that we have no right to condemn these indigenous practices of non-Western peoples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>philosonomicon:<\/strong> A philosophical prolegomenon.<\/p>\n<p>Dave&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dabacon.org\/home\/papers\/t1.pdf\">PhD thesis<\/a> begins with a <em>philosonomicon<\/em>, as does <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottaaronson.com\/thesis.html\">mine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>high-hanging fruit:<\/strong> the opposite of low-hanging fruit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do you ever think about the Nonabelian Hidden Subgroup Problem?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;No, that&#8217;s <em>high-hanging fruit<\/em>.  I like to watch other people jump for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>napotonin:<\/strong> any substance that makes you want to nap.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ohhhh &#8230; must&#8217;ve been a lot of <em>napotonin<\/em> in that calzone &#8230; can&#8217;t work &#8230; unnngghhhh&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>nontrivia:<\/strong> the opposite of trivia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re so smart, how come you&#8217;re no good at Trivial Pursuit?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Because I prefer to fill my brain with <em>nontrivia<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to speed up the adoption of these words by the Oxford English Dictionary, Dave and I hereby ask that every comment on this post correctly use at least one of them.
