{"id":6739,"date":"2022-10-04T11:36:13","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T16:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scottaaronson.blog\/?p=6739"},"modified":"2022-10-04T11:36:13","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T16:36:13","slug":"two-more-shorties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottaaronson.blog\/?p=6739","title":{"rendered":"Two more shorties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For anyone living under a rock with no access to nerd social media, Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/2022\/press-release\/\">finally won the Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a>, for their celebrated experiments that rubbed everyone&#8217;s faces in the reality of quantum entanglement (including Bell inequality violation and quantum teleportation).  I don&#8217;t personally know Aspect or Clauser, but Zeilinger <em>extremely<\/em> graciously hosted me and my wife Dana when we visited Vienna in 2012, even bringing us to the symphony (he knows the director and has front-row seats), and somehow making me feel more cultured rather than less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As usual, the recipe for winning the Nobel Prize in Physics is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(1) Do something where anyone who knows about it is like, \u201cwhy haven\u2019t they given the Nobel Prize in Physics for that yet?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(2) Live long enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huge congratulations to Aspect, Clauser, and Zeilinger!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=elham+kashefi\">Elham Kashefi<\/a>, my quantum complexity theory colleague and treasured friend for more than 20 years, brought to my attention a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScAHNMbbvT9rWujs0Q_lQqiYz0jnx__tSVa7CQZyu3b4t8DXg\/viewform\">Statement of Solidarity with Students in Iran from the International Academic Community<\/a>.  Of course I was happy to sign the statement, just like I was <a href=\"https:\/\/scottaaronson.blog\/?p=409\">back in 2009<\/a> when brave Iranian students similarly risked their lives and freedom for women&#8217;s rights and other Enlightenment values against the theocracy.  I urge you to sign the statement as well.  If enough <em>Shtetl-Optimized<\/em> readers disapprove of their brutal repression, surely the mullahs will reconsider!
